Oral Motor Disorder is inability to use or manipulate oral mechanisms of the mouth such as the lips, tongue, and/or jaw for functional speech, feeding, chewing, blowing, or producing various sounds. Most oral motor disorders occur with children during early childhood speech and learning development, although if not treated early, this disorder could persist through adolescence and beyond. The disorder may be acquired with individuals through a traumatic brain injury or through various medical conditions, including but not limited to strokes, seizures, Parkinson’s, head and/or brain injuries, or other various medical conditions that affects one’s ability to manipulate one’s oral mechanisms of the mouth. Signs of Oral Motor Disorders can vary from child to child or from adult to adult. Usually, one can notice signs or symptoms with the individual having difficulty moving the tongue, opening and closing the mouth, chewing food, and/or manipulating the lips. Further, signs may also include grinding of the teeth, drooling, weak jaw muscles, and unclear speech sounds.
