Fluency/Stuttering

Stuttering is a disorder of speech that in disrupted by involuntary repetitions and/or prolonged sounds, words, phrases, or sentences, which may also include involuntary pauses to produce sounds for speech. Stuttering affects one’s ability to be fluent with speech – also known as fluency.

Stuttering occurs with children during early childhood speech development, although the disorder can be acquired with adults through a traumatic brain injury. The disorder may be acquired through various medical conditions, including but not limited to strokes, seizures, head and/or brain injuries, or other various medical conditions that affects one’s ability to produce fluency of speech.

Signs and symptoms of speech include repetitions of words or parts of words as well as prolongations of speech. Individuals who stutter may also have speech completely stopped or blocked, with little, if any production of sound, which may last for a period of time until after some effort the person completes pronunciation or production of the word. Further, individuals who have fluency or stuttering problems may utilize the interjections between words, such as “um” or “uh”.
