Autism is a developmental disability or disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate and socialize with others. The disorder affects the brain’s normal development of information processing and the ability of spoken language and interaction. Autism usually appears within the first three years of a person’s life. Early signs of Autism may include but not limited to difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, and social interaction. Signs may also include communication with hand gestures, repetition of words or phrases, withdrawn from social interaction, inability to make friends, short attention span, and aggression towards others or sudden outbursts. Severity of these symptoms may vary with each child. Usually these signs are noticed at a very early age. Treatment of Autism includes working with an American Speech-Hearing-Language Association ( ASHA) certified Speech-Language Pathologist, an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) certified Occupational Therapist, or also an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) certified Physical Therapist.
